You Can’t Buy Mastery

Twenty years ago, I watched phenomenal facilitators work with people in human development. I studied and listened in awe while they, as we say in Personal Development Land, “processed” their students. These facilitators or coaches would do focused work with the students, from the students point of tension, pain or confusion. The facilitator would guide them, as the student was willing, to the other side, or at least help them to take some real some steps forward. This experiential learning is profound in both business settings, or personal growth.

I was amazed.

It was incredible to see these coaches real-time, and watch as their intuitive hits rang spot on, nearly every time they spoke. What?? Yes.

In my naiveté I wondered… how do they know? How do they see what’s behind the mask of emotion, the story, the walls, or the rhetoric? How did they know that person was ready to finally breakthrough or scale? Now, I know.

masks

It’s a calling.

Sounds spiritual. And…I believe it is. When you step into your calling, purpose or cause, the greatest parts of you are unlocked and ignited. Your intuitive or spiritual self combines with your ability, education and effort. When you find the thing or things that you were created to do, if you’re aware, you know.

And then there’s the final key to mastery, time. You can’t quick-link to that level of mastery simply from text books, teachers and mentors. You can’t metabolize quotes, information or inspiration, such that you can just propel it forward into others, with spot on timing and nearly flawless delivery.

When someone who isn’t ready attempts a mastery level role, their students or employees won’t find as much value.

women entrepreneur

The gold, magic and pure power of experience,  collaborates to bring all your raw talent and passion together.  It’s hard to articulate if you’ve never experienced it yourself.

I studied hard. I was trained, mentored, and certified in personal development and business consulting. #serialentrepreneur I worked and I served for countless hours. Years of being a committed, consistent student, working from where I was, both failing and succeeding along the way… and yet reaching for mastery. Those are the touchstones of my capacity to deliver my work today. And I just adore what I do.

The Big Mistake…
Is- skipping parts of this rights-of-passage process, because of impatience, poor mentoring, ego or entitlement. To be exceptional, your mastery levels must always be humbly, earned.

Don’t skip any part of the perfect process that these elements will bring to your practice, cause or calling. The old truth of 10,000 hours of experience, or something like that, truly is the golden key that brings your vision to fruition.

The Secret
Humility reminds you to take the journey, with no shortcuts. Humility… when you know that there is so much yet to learn about, experience and understand. And when you reach a mastery level, you will know. But, you will still make mistakes. And you won’t think of the epic successes as yours, but they will belong to your clients, and those you mentor.

And as you continue, more humility greets you with the kiss of knowing, that we are all equally called to greatness. No one is ever bigger or smaller in the circle. It’s not about Race. Geography. Gender. Profession. Religion. The big difference is, only some say yes to the call.

Courageous Convos- Race

SO I am a guest tomorrow on the wildly popular Idaho TV show, with it’s creator Derrick Boles. It’s called; Courageous Conversations.

Derrick n sheli

This topic tomorrow, on RACE, definitely takes courage to talk about, especially on TV! It is charged with media spins, politics, old hurtful history, ignorance on all sides to some degree, and a fierce lack of solutions.

Part of me wants to be silent, like I am often on social media, with topics such as these. Why? Because I don’t want to be blown up over my thoughts. And I don’t want to offend, hurt, or confuse ANY of my friends.

But, as my friend Derrick and I have often said in our private conversations, this is part of the problem. The only dialogue happening about Race today is the media spun, anger infused, irrational talk that only fuels this long burning fire of sad segregation in our country.

I love all people. I truly do. I want us ALL to be able to ask each other questions, both ways. I want to be taught what you think and feel, AND I would like to be heard too.

I am not a racist, simply because of my White skin, as you are not any of the stereotypes you may feel you live under.

We are all children of God, and we need to begin COMPASSIONATE, Courageous Conversations, now, before it’s too late for the US to do so. Join us? Before we lose each other, and everything we have all worked so hard for.

“Please plan to tune in to my television series ‘Courageous Conversations’ this Sunday at 11:30 am on Channel 12.  Topic: Race to Resolution”   Derrick Boles

The New Black… for LEADERS

Vulnerability.

What does that word bring up for you?

Open. Victim. Brave. Weak. Insecure. Truth-telling.

vulnerable oprah

We tend to associate vulnerability with beliefs, people, and places that we have experienced in our past. In the English language, Vulnerability can reference various states of being, depending on the assumed or referenced context;

  • the state of being vulnerable or exposed
  • easily hurt or harmed physically, mentally, financially or emotionally

Most of the Vulnerability definitions you can find online are pretty much referring to an old-school, “bad news” come-from.

If you are military for example, you are trained not to be vulnerable, because vulnerability leaves you open to attack. This is similar to the old Corporate leadership structure. Act tough. Be “strong”. Represent a fortress-like presence so that everyone will respect you, be intimidated by you, and assume you do not have any weak spots they can prey upon.

vulnerable 1

This doesn’t work anymore.
There are certainly moments or situations to “shore up” ourselves, and not be opened up wide. Not every situation or person is safe. However, all of us are vincible, whether we act strong all the time or not. And we all know this- not only about ourselves, but about mankind in general. (cat’s out of the bag!) It used to be fashionable to act tough all the time. But these days, the new coolness, the must-have tool in any leaders tool-belt, the new Black for Leaders is: Healthy Vulnerability, by choice.

Healthy Vulnerability…. What?
“Vulnerability is the absolute heartbeat of innovation and creativity,” Brene Brown says. “There can be zero innovation without vulnerability.” Brene has a couple of very powerful and humorous TED TALKS on Vulnerability. Brené Brown Ph.D. LMSW is an American scholar, author, and public speaker, who is currently a research professor at the University of Houston

Entrepreneurs, Leaders, Managers, CEO’s, Bloggers, thought leaders…we are all vulnerable. Yup. There you have it. Don’t fight it. You’re expending pointless energy if you resist- something leaders don’t like to do! The minute we choose into putting ourselves, our beliefs, our ideas out there, we are vulnerable. The more you do it, the more vulnerable you are. To be a WORLD CHANGER, vulnerability is a huge key to success.

vulnerable armsAccording to Brown, vulnerability is: the combination of uncertainty, risk, and emotional exposure.
Hmmm. This is pretty much entrepreneurship.
I know- I’ve been in it since 1995. Vulnerability is the natural culture of what we do. To pretend you are not vulnerable, is to lack authenticity. It’s tough to respect, much less follow that leader. He or she is perpetuating an atmosphere of denial and anxiety. It’s real, it’s healthy, and it is more courageous for every leader to be OK with healthy vulnerability. We ask our teams to do it. So- how can we inspire our teams to be honest, and take searching self-inventories of what IS working, and what is NOT working, if we do not lead them by example?  It is what I do, not just what I say. And if what I say and do are not in alignment, (that includes alignment with the companies results) it’s quite obvious.

So, just be pathetic all the time? To everyone?

vulnerable question

Um…No 🙂

Again, vulnerability is powerful when it’s accessed at the proper time, place and crowd.

I am not saying go drinking with your peeps, and totally breakdown, with no resolve or value as a net result. (really- don’t do this)
I am also not implying you should tell all your deepest secrets to your whole team or company.

I am not saying cry all the time. That would be exhausting. 🙂

Balance and being intuitively appropriate are also leadership keys.
You don’t throw out those other skills that you have worked so hard to cultivate. You integrate them all, intuitively.

Some leaders go to extremes. “I want to be strong and have them believe I can do anything! I don’t want to be vulnerable and show my fears, failures or weak areas…”
It’s NOT either or. It is BOTH/AND. How cool is that? Knowing what tool from your belt to use, when and how is critical.
measure
LEADERSHIP then is a customized set of skills and methods, masterfully woven together in doses, at the right times and places to be effective for all. Lots of solutions, winning and connecting will come with that combo. So will production, employee retention, and stunning innovation.

If you are open to it, being real about both your strengths and your blinders can be inspiring. At times you may reveal things to everyone. Sometimes that may be to a small elite mastermind group in the profession, company or team.

Sometimes both the bravado of releasing a vision, and the passion behind it, followed by humble tones of the obstacles that you face, and even a tear can be a winning combination. *I am not saying put that kind of speech together. If it’s too thought out, if it has a hook or contrived agenda- then it’s not inspiring. That’s not vulnerable, that’s manipulative theatrics. Big difference, and they can feel it.

puppet on a string

When I am speaking, I am open to all facets of my personality, strengths, and tools. I know where I am going, but I feel free to authentically use the words that come up for me in that moment, not scripted out. I also access both positivity and passion, vision casting and encouragement, with vulnerability in telling real stories, and addressing REAL challenges, so that I meet people where they are. I have had bliss and failure, and so have they. We are no different at our core. We all want to have purpose. We all want successful relationships. We all have dreams to fulfill. So resonating with your team, audience, or company, versus towering over them really works. It works because it’s connection. People dig true connection. They trust it. And trust is hard to gain these days, but so magical when you do.

vulnerable 2

An Island vs. a Village

We were not born alone, on an island. We don’t get anywhere without others, bad or good.
We accomplish things in communities of people. Family, Friends, Work, Church, Charities, Clubs…..it doesn’t really matter what we are creating; we do it better together.

happy meetingWhen a leader says: What are your ideas on this issue? Let’s brainstorm on this challenge or event…. Let’s bring all our experience, education and collective wisdom together in creating a new paradigm… THAT is inspiring. That is motivating. It’s engaging! People pay attention, and feel worthy when THEY are engaged.

That means you don’t have all the answers. And- you don’t. I don’t. That means you are taking time to listen. That means you care what others are thinking. That makes a great leader. There are times when time is short, and we just get to GO, with little collaboration. I get that. If that is most of the time, you may be trying to accomplish too much, too soon, with too little perspective and feedback. Narrow scopes offer narrow results. But there can be more time, blocked out intentionally, to collaborate and grow your company, your vision, your production, your influence and reach…by enrolling others.

To enroll others, we deserve to be vulnerable, as well as all the other traits that make a phenomenal leader. Perhaps in my next blog I will tell the story of my own personal “ONE DAY” when I totally got it, that vulnerability is paramount for a great leader. It’s mandatory for me.

Not always easy. But often necessary. And worth it.

I would love to hear YOUR comments and thoughts on vulnerability, especially for leaders. And any likes, shares…always welcome! 🙂

Control=Old School… Inspire them!

This is the most simple answer, to a common challenge for many leaders. I learned this one in my twenties, both in management positions, and in owning my first business.

You cannot control others. Period.

leadership style

Yes, you can nag them. Write them up. Fire them perhaps. Then start all over again. But at the end of the day, THEY CHOOSE. They decide if they are in or out. They decide if the organization’s message resonates enough with them to invest at a high level. They choose how hard, long and creatively they will work.

In my consultations with organizations, leaders and teams, I find that often Team Leaders will spin with frothy frustration over control tug-of-wars with their teams. Exhausting. Let’s get real; People don’t go to work because they want you to be proud of them. It’s not THEIR company or vision. (this is important for CEO’s who think everyone should think like them- it ain’t gonna happen) And they don’t care about their managers bonus, generally speaking. They are there for some internal and/or external reason of their own. Personal fulfillment. Bills to pay. This is the field they got a degree in. Or this is a step in the direction they are headed. Or because they love their job. Or they love the type of clients your company attracts… But they are not there to fulfill your ambitions as a team leader, or company owner/founder. Ambitions like: status, numbers, money, ego, power, market position, retirement, moving up the ladder etc.

That’s OK that they are there for themselves. You are there for yourself as well. It’s your dream, vision, calling or whatever. So- like your team, you are all there for personal reasons.

www.shelig.com fire

When I facilitate workshops, the same elements apply.

People show up. They show up for a reason. Those reasons differ. What they will all individually bring to the room dynamic is unique. What they will create, and take away from that space is unique! We aren’t robots, right? So then my job is NOT to control them, but rather to inspire them. (this is way more fun and NOT exhausting!)

SO- I create a safe, premium environment for the participants to do whatever work they came to do. But the majority of what I do, I create during the live process, with the team I am working with. I have my intentions beforehand of what I am hired to accomplish. And, how I get there totally depends on the participants! I move from my list of planned exercises, and adapt them to match the dynamics of the particular individuals or team. I base this on: their strengths, their attitudes, the time frame, the obstacles, the personalities, the intention of that particular workshop, and the biggest factor: What they would like to create or take away our time together. *I have them share this, early on in our sessions.

What do they want to create?

What THEIR intention is. That is their hot button, and how you can understand them. What motivates THEM? Remember, It may be very different from what motivates you. That’s OK, as long as they ARE motivated, right? When you understand them, you can then be an inspiration to help them fulfill that goal. Inspired individuals, teams and volunteers are happier and more fulfilled. Happier more fulfilled people produce more, produce quality, last longer, and make your life as a leader better.  But it doesn’t come from them having a copy of their job description. It doesn’t come from your companies expectations or demands. It comes from place inside of them, not just an external call to action anyone can deliver.

A team and the leader are in a co-creative process, hand in hand.

Neither one is more important, or more right. The leader is in that position, hopefully, because he or she has those strengths to help facilitate. But just as important are the strengths of the individuals on the team. Collectively the agenda is accomplished. The leader then, is more the funnel, creating the space and design for all to participate fully, and troubleshoot when things are not going in the direction that is valuable to all.

Friends was an American sitcom. The series was a huge hit, and is one of the most popular TV shows of all time.

Jennifer Aniston was arguably the most popular influencer or leader of the cast. But- without all the other cast mates, the show wouldn’t have been so ridiculously successful for so long. Think about that show without Phoebe, Ross or Chandler. This is true of the people that surround any leader. They are your co-stars. Your biggest assets. Your positive chemistry, and what you create with them is what will make your business or organization thrive.

If a leader or manager is looking for a lot of the glory, this is tough. As a leader- you should want your team getting that praise. They need to be the rock stars. Then they will produce more too. That is when a leader truly is great; when they teach others how to lead.

Screw it Up.

Go ahead. Make mistakes. I do…a lot. It’s proof you are trying.

Sometimes when you innovate, you make mistakes. It is best to admit them quickly, and get on with improving your other innovations.

I am over zealous at times. Or quick to brainstorm and try new things. Fast out of the shoot perhaps, with new ideas, propositions or positions. You don’t know until you GO, right? (nod yes here 🙂 )

Turn your wounds into wisdom.
~Oprah Winfrey

TV Oprah

So sometimes that means I will fail. Sometimes, I will EPIC fail, (in front of a crowd) causing some sort of mess to clean up. Miscommunications, different net results than were expected…and yes- even hurt feelings can occur when we put ourselves out there. Steve Jobs, Mother Teresa, Oprah, Billy Graham, Henry Ford… they all made their share of mistakes. They are skin and blood like you and I! This helped them find the right paths to success. And it can help you too.

Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.
~Henry Ford

Inventions, start ups, paying it forward, new systems, they all come from “crazy” initial ideas. People call it crazy because it hasn’t been done or seen before. Raw daydreams of what could be. What IS possible. The dreamers, the doers, the visionaries…they put themselves out there. So when you do that, a lot…you will have more chances to fail. BUT…

You will also have more chances to shine. Y E S!

To discover more talents and strengths. To meet more dynamic people to collaborate with in this journey. And there will be success. Lessons learned. Friends made for life. Ideas born of both the successes AND failures of yesterday, which become the staircase for tomorrows amazing moments. Those are built from the ground we lay today, one idea and a time, and one step of action and faith simultaneously.

Step out. Speak up. Make mistakes. Be yourself. Be your greatness. Own your blind spots. Evolve. CREATE.

The Wizard of AHAs

oz dorothy in house

Who can forget this totally legit, classic movie? (Although the Wicked Witch STILL freaks me out!)

Well, there is so much more behind Dorothy’s story than we all knew! Never fear, I can fill you in from here…

You see, Dorothy had a whole BUNCH of common ailments she was privately struggling with. She thought if she ran away from home, this would cure everything. She struggled with things like:

Depression, Anxiety, Panic attacks, Insomnia, Headaches, Allergies and more. She couldn’t take all her overwhelming symptoms anymore, so off she went to distract herself from these issues, and find someplace “Over The Rainbow” to see if she would feel better there!

Upon landing in OZ, besides having a headache, feeling terribly jet-lagged and sore, Dorothy was immediately seized by sneezing, coughing…. allergies!  They were much worse in OZ, unfortunately. (so many flowers were blooming there!)

oz flowers

Soon Dorothy’s depression was escalating again, and her anxiety attacks were really coming on! Lucky for Dorothy, she met Scarecrow! Scarecrow was so sweet, and helped distract Dorothy from her own problems, especially when she noticed how screwed up he was too! YES! She was not alone. He also had Allergies and Anxiety, but Scarecrow often struggled with feeling like he had no brain! In truth, he DID have a brain, but sadly he couldn’t focus, he was so easily distracted! He was also really hyper sometimes, and it made learning and just sitting still difficult. One time, some bullies pulled him completely apart! He had Arthritis pains and inflammation from his injuries. So they set off together, hoping that the Wizard of Dr. Oz Dorothy had heard about could help. He apparently was some big, important dude, who claimed he could magically fix anyone.

Soon they bumped into Tin Man. Ironically, Tin Man ALSO seemed sad and in fear, because he thought he had no heart. He had been taking a medication that left him feeling numb instead of better. “Jeepers, is everyone a mess or what?” Dorothy thought. Tin Man also had many aches, pains, rust and mold from being stuck in one position for so long, out in the rain. He had many bug bites that were also bothersome. PLUS, he was so dirty and smelly from not being cleaned for so long. He too needed much help! He joined the adventure to go see Dr. Oz. The Tin Man had Googled Dr. Oz, and the reports on him were both favorable and grandiose, AND quite negative and debatable. There was also great controversy over who was funding Dr. Oz, and the “solutions” he so quickly handed out to all who came.

Now the Wicked Witch was sent from a large covert agency, protected at the highest levels, to cause all kinds of grief and challenges for Dorothy and her friends. She would spray horrible pesticides on all the flowers and food she could find, which polluted everything, and made the people sick. She would give out medicines to “cure” the people of their ailments, but alas, many would become more sick, or even die from the side affects. She was truly evil indeed.

oz witch

The uplifting news was, Glenda, the Good Witch, also appeared from time to time. She smelled wonderfully of Lavender and Sandalwood, which calmed Dorothy and her friends down immediately. She always seemed happy and grounded, (plus her skin was so dang perfect!) Dorothy and her friends were very impressed by her. Glenda always gave Dorothy and her friends hope, that there were answers they would certainly find as they stayed on the sometimes difficult journey of discovery.

oz glenda

Then Dorothy, Scarecrow and Tin Man met Lion. Dorothy soon realized her panic attacks were small-scale compared to Lion’s! He had so much fear, he couldn’t stop shaking. He rarely went out to meet people, and always ran away when he thought challenge was near! He couldn’t keep any job. He was even more depressed than the rest of them, crying all the time! He also had scar tissue from a bad fight (with his wife), and Diabetes. Lion had always eaten too much processed sugar and artificial dyes, given to him largely from the Wicked Witch in her candy and treats. They were all poisons.  “Good grief, MOST of us have issues, don’t we?” Dorothy exclaimed. This started another crying fit from Lion, and so the crew set out to finally meet Dr. Oz, hoping he truly would have all the answers they so desperately needed!

lion oz

When they reached Dr. OZ, there was a sign on his door: “We no longer take most insurances. You must pay BIG cash for all solutions given out here. I am out to lunch and then golfing for a week or two in Hawaii, come back later. For emergencies, call 911”

Well, Dorothy and her Motley Crew were devastated. They intuitively knew all along, that it had all sounded too good to be true.

Just then, they smelled sweet Lavender and Sandalwood… “Glenda!” They all shouted out in glee! “We are in trouble! We have so many problems that are keeping us from enjoying life! What can you do to save us from all our symptoms?”

Glenda smiled. “You three have always had what you needed to be well, you just needed to realize that someone else cannot heal you with their “magic”, only you can do that.” Dorothy and her friends were confused. “Only we can do that? But how?”

“Well, now that you are ready and open to listen to this, Dorothy! God gave you some killer Diva Ruby Pumps girl! If you click your heels three times, they will activate some amazing pure essential Oils to come out of Tin Man’s oil can. These oils have many, if not all the answers for your ailments, symptoms, emotional imbalances and then some. Ready to give them a try? They are all natural, so they cannot hurt you, only help you. I too used to suffer from depression, but not anymore”. “YOU?!! Depressed?!!” Dorothy and crew said in total shock and amazement. (They had always thought Glenda was on Crack, or something that made her happy all the time.)

“What have we got to lose” They all exclaimed! Dorothy clicked on her Ruby Pumps three times…

oz pumps

Lo and behold, Tin Man’s oil can filled up! First with: Lavender,  Orange, Melissa, Sandalwood, Balance, and Elevation oils for all their Depression, Anxiety, Insomnia and more.

Then it was full of Frankincense, one of the most powerful oils of all time, which helped all their aches, pains, inflammation, confusion, wrinkles, fatigue, infections, pre-cancerous cells and SO much more.

Next is always a crowd favorite, Deep Blue. It instantly provided pain relief from sore achy muscles and joints, plus began the longer healing process with all their former injuries. Heavenly!

Then came Purify and On Guard oils to clean and disinfect their bodies, shoes and clothes. Dorothy was so glad to know she could clean her whole house and car with no toxic fumes for her or Toto to inhale. Ahhhhh.

Then the wonderful Melaleuca Oil for Toto’s painful chronic ear infections.  🙂

  • Headaches? Past Tense(blend) or Peppermint
  • ADD or ADHD symptoms? Vetiver, In Tune(blend), Lavender, Serenity(blend), Elevation(blend), Balance(blend), Frankincense, Melissa
  • Bug Repellant? Terrashield(blend)
  • Asthma/Allergies? Breathe(blend), Peppermint, Frankincense (2 drop Lemon+2 drops Lavender+2 drops Peppermint in an all natural veggie capsule= organic antihistamine)
  • Weight Issues? Slim and Sassy(blend)
  • Spider Issues? Peppermint diluted with water in a spray bottle
  • Wicked Witch? On Guard kills bacteria, viruses, and most bad things. 🙂  All doTERRA oils are Antibacterial.

There is so much more… but you get the idea. *Along with a healthy organic diet, lots of filtered water, exercise and good rest, and pure essential oils are another incredible solution to thousands of issues we all face every day.
